Coming up with New Year’s Resolutions is easy and fun, providing hope to many that the new year will be filled with self-accomplishment. When it comes to fulfilling those resolutions, well, that is a different and far more challenging story. However, with the right plan in place, you can join a select group of people that make their New Year’s Resolutions become a reality.

Tips for Keeping Your New Year’s Resolutions

There are many reasons why people often fail to follow through on their New Year’s commitments, such as unattainable goals, a change in desire, etc. The following are four effective tips on how to establish the right resolutions and make them become a reality in 2020.

Establish realistic goals

Most already have their goals established and are more focused on staying consistent on the resolutions they currently have in place. However, staying consistent may require altering your new year’s resolutions slightly to make them more realistic. The key is to set attainable goals that you can strive for daily, rather than lofty, seemingly hard to reach end objectives that discourage daily effort. For example, instead of setting a goal to lose thirty pounds in 2020, set a resolution to exercise more and eliminate unhealthy snacks each week.

Create positive daily habits

One of the primary factors in whether someone does or does not fulfill their resolutions is consistency. One great way to stay consistent is to establish quality daily habits, such as getting between seven and eight hours of sleep each night, reducing activities that cause stress, etc. Additionally, to think positively about your resolution, rather than viewing it as a burden that will cause guilt if it is not fulfilled. Instead, work towards your goals positively, making it fun and rewarding each day.

Give yourself incentives

As mentioned, it is important to reward yourself and have fun as you work towards your New Year’s resolutions. For example, let’s say your goal is to exercise three days a week for the entire year. Each week after your third time exercising, treat yourself to a small bowl of ice cream. Of course, there are numerous ways to create incentives and each has their own preference, but having a reward system in place is a great way to create additional motivation.

Utilize a support system

Another common reason many fail to follow through with their new year’s resolutions is that they try and accomplish their goals on their own. Instead of keeping your resolutions to yourself, utilize the help of others to help you reach your goals. For example, if your goal is to wake up earlier and read for thirty minutes before work, consider having your spouse make sure you get up on time. Another great way to utilize the help of others is to have someone else create the same resolution, such as using a friend as a workout partner to reach your fitness resolutions. By using a support system, you can ensure you remain consistent with your resolutions in 2020.
